We want everyone to have a great time at Jabberwocky and ask everyone to abide by our Rules of Play. These rules exist to ensure that everyone at Jabberwocky stays safe and happy. Acceptance of them is a condition of entry. Jabberwocky reserves the right to refuse admission.

We are here to provide a safe and clean environment for every guest – of whatever age – to enjoy and have fun. All children are allowed full use of the play equipment, specific to their age – baby area for those under 2 years and main play frame for those 2 and over – and activities available at the time of their visit.

For safety reasons, we kindly request that unless helping a child, adults do not go onto the play frame.

Our staff know their most important role is to help everyone enjoy their visit to Jabberwocky. However, supervision of children remains the sole responsibility of the accompanying adult. Also, since germs and sickness are best left at home, please bring any children who are sick or injured to enjoy Jabberwocky another day.

Entry cost qualifies guests for a single 90 minute session. Babies under the age of 1, adults and older children who do not wish to use the play frame are admitted free.

We take pride in our business and have invested in facilities to make sure we keep to the highest standards. To help us, please encourage all children to use the toilet before becoming distracted in play. Our toilets and baby change areas are inspected regularly. We ask that no food or drink is to be taken into the play area.

Shoes must be removed before entering the play areas and socks must be worn at all times. Please leave children’s shoes at reception, as this helps to keep the café area and play area clean. We ask that you remove any jewellery or potentially sharp objects before entering the play area or joining in play activities.

Our food hygiene regulations restrict the consumption of food and drink purchased elsewhere so, with the exception of baby food, only food and drink bought on the premises may be consumed. If you any have concerns about ingredients that may cause allergic reactions, please ask a member of our staff who will be able to advise on content.

We have facilities to warm food or milk as needed. However we cannot be responsible for the temperature at which the food is given to your child. We are part of the Breastfeeding Friendly scheme and welcome nursing mothers.

Please use the facilities in the baby changing toilets for changing and disposal of nappies. Nappies can be purchased from reception.

State of the art technology has been installed at Jabberwocky to keep everyone safe and secure.

Obviously we can’t have any bullying at Jabberwocky, so anyone who shows persistently rough or unsociable behaviour will sadly be asked to leave, after one warning. This decision is entirely at the discretion of the management, and no refunds will be given.

We can’t have anyone deliberately damaging the play structures or any part of Jabberwocky. Anyone who ignores this rule will be expected to pay for repairs.

Whilst every precaution is taken to ensure your time here is a positive and happy one, accidents may happen. Any accident must be reported to a member of staff and documented for our records. Our staff have access to First Aid and a trained First Aider is always available.

Jabberwocky does not accept responsibility for:

  1. Items lost or stolen from the premises
  2. Loss or injury caused through misuse of play facilities or lack of adequate supervision by an accompanying responsible adult.

at jabberwocky you will find:

eat me, drink me

At the Jabberwocky cafe we strive to provide wholesome, nutritious but above all, delicious food.

Our café welcomes everyone and is open daily, serving an inspiring selection of drinks and snacks.  Our specially trained baristas are on hand to serve up the perfect cup of coffee made from freshly ground beans artisan roasted by Glen Lyon Coffee and we pride ourselves on our fine selection of teas.

We have a scrumptious selection of home-baking, from modest scones to indulgent cakes and delicious hot chocolate from Haddington’s own Chocolate Tree, and ice cream from fabulous Lucas of Musselburgh.

For younger diners we serve child sized portions of all our food, as well as a selection of fresh juices and milk.

lounge around

The idea behind Jabberwocky was to create somewhere original and relaxing for children, parents and carers. We wished to create a space where children enjoyed playing while adults got to have a pleasant and calming time too. With our eclectic (and sometimes eccentric) mix of vintage and antique furniture, curated finds, subtle colour scheme and natural wood finishes, our cafe is the ideal spot to enjoy great coffee, delicious home baking and catch up with friends while your children play.

We have a wide range of tables – from small ones perfect for parents wanting to log on to our free Wi-fi and do a spot of work, to larger tables perfect for more sociable groups.  We also have several comfy couches – just try not to fall asleep! Our dedicated baby area has comfortable seating for nursing mothers wanting a little more privacy. The  bookshelf holds a selection of fiction and non-fiction.  We operate a read-cycle scheme, so bring along one of your old books and swap it for one from our shelves.

There is also a notice board where local groups can advertise activities and events, and our guests can advertise children’s items for sale.

Each child will receive a Wee Replicator goody bag and a certificate to say that they are now a ‘Wee Replicator’!

How do I know if you have space on the date I’d like to book?
Call in and ask, email us on or telephone on 01620 248070. We advise a provisional booking to reserve your chosen date, which is confirmed on payment. A provisional booking lasts one week.

We recommend booking as early as possible, especially if you’d like a magician, face painter, entertainer etc who are often booked well in advance, especially during the Edinburgh Festival and at Christmas time.

How do I book an entertainer?
We will check availability from our partner entertainers, magicians and face painters team and arrange for them to invoice you separately. All the entertainers we work with are fully insured and safety checked. It is not possible for customers to independently arrange their own entertainer for a Jabberwocky party.

When you choose one of our parties, our price depends on the options you choose. We will make all arrangements and give you a full breakdown at the time of booking so you can plan your party within your budget. The cost will include all food, room hire, soft play charges if required, invitations and thank you cards, party bags if required and VAT. Party invitations can be collected at the time of booking. Your invoice will not include costs of any entertainers, but we will book their visit and arrange for you to receive a separate invoice from them.

A minimum deposit of the party cost for 10 children is required to confirm the booking. The remainder is due for payment the week before the party takes place, when final numbers are known, so that you will never be presented with any extra charges on the party day. We reserve the right to re-let the space if payment is not made by the required date.

Can we book the entire soft play?
As we don’t want other customers to arrive and find the soft play is unavailable, this is not possible. However as we will know your party numbers in advance, at very busy times we may ask other customers to wait until the play frame is less busy. This ensures there will always be room for your party on the play frame, and that there are never too many children on the play frame at any one time.

What about the party food?
We provide a range of freshly-made sandwiches, snacks and cakes according to the number and ages of the children. According to our café policy, all our food is made from the best ingredients, locally sourced wherever possible, and additives- free. Please let us know if your party group has special dietary needs or allergies.

Do you provide birthday cakes?
We do not bake birthday cakes, although we can arrange for a cake from a local Mum who bakes cakes to order for you.

Do I need to stay with the children?
We need at least one responsible adult with the birthday party at all times.

x marks the spot

Jabberwocky is in the centre of the pretty East Lothian market town of Haddington. We are on the pedestrian area opposite the well sign-posted John Gray Centre Library and Museum on Lodge Street. Look for the dragon sign! We are committed to becoming a carbon-neutral business and have a Green Travel Plan and policy in place for our staff and customers, encouraging people where possible to choose active modes of travel to Jabberwocky. This is not only good for the environment, but good for health too! Haddington is great for cycling and there are bike racks directly in front of the building.

Because we are right in the centre, it’s easy to walk to us from anywhere in the town. We are well-served by regular buses, all of which stop at Court Street, Market Street and the High Street, which are a couple of minutes’ walk away. There is free 90 minutes car parking available on all surrounding streets. There is also ample free parking in the long stay car park behind Tesco, and at weekends the Council car parks, just around the corner on Neilson Park Road and Brewery St are open to the public at no charge. We are delighted that Jabberwocky is fully accessible to wheelchairs users.  Local bus timetables can be found at Prentice CoachesBorders BusesEast Coast Buses – 104 & 107 and Traveline Scotland
